Coastal NC Lawns

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda grass is a warm-season grass, requiring full sun, making it optimal in Topsail Beach, Surf City, and southern regions of the country. Bermuda lawns are known for their ability to tolerate difficult conditions like drought, heat, and plenty of foot traffic. It’s a favorite because it recovers from damage much quicker than other types of grass. Bermuda grass spreads by stolons and rhizomes, think above and below ground stems, which means it requires frequent trimming and edging to prevent overgrowth into flower beds or over driveways.

To keep your Bermuda grass lawn vibrant and plush, you need to be vigilant about taking care of it; this requires year round care. Bermuda grass should be mowed once or twice a week, with the mower blades around 1.5 inches. We also recommend dethatching in the winter and aerating in the spring to maximize growth during the peak season. At Rooted Property Services, our lawn care team has the knowledge and tools to keep your Bermuda lawn looking full and maintained year round.

Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass is a popular choice for lawns throughout the southeastern United States, known for dense, wear resistant lawns that grow best in full sun or light shade conditions. Popular throughout Sneads Ferry and Hampstead, Zoysia grass has stiff and dense leaves, giving your lawn the sensation of “walking on a cushion” though requiring sharp blades to ensure a clean and even cut. At Rooted Property Services, we recommend cutting Zoysia Grass around 2.5 inches in height every 7 to 10 days to ensure even growth. This grass also spreads through both stolons and rhizomes, meaning frequent edging is required to limit the underground growth from creeping into your landscaping. Let our professionals and high quality equipment ensure your Zoysia grass is well maintained so you can enjoy “walking on air”.

Centipede Grass

Centipede grass is the most commonly used grass throughout Sneads Ferry, Topsail Beach, Holly Ridge, and Hampstead given its ability to thrive in sandy, acidity soils. Centipede is a slower growing, coarse-textured turf that is regarded as low maintenance compared to other grass types. That said, centipede grass does not tolerate excessive traffic, compaction, high pH values, nor excessive thatch, drought or shade. Centipede grass is known to spread by stolons, those above ground stems that can be pulled out by improper mowing, leading to bare spots. Combine the lack of tolerance for excessive thatch, mowing height of 1 to 2 inches, and the likelihood of creating bare spots, diligent care is required to ensure proper mowing and successful growth. Rooted Property Services is experienced maintaining Centipede grass and can provide a healthier and fuller lawn.

St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine grass is a fast-growing turfgrass that is well adapted for the coastal plain, including Holly Ridge, North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Hampstead. Dependent on the variety of St. Augustine grass, this darker colored grass is very shade and salt tolerant making it a preferred choice for coastal properties. Given its rapid growth rate, St. Augustine grass needs frequent mowing at a height of 3 inches to ensure a dense, lush lawn. St. Augustine grass cannot be seeded and has to be planted as either sod or plugs, meaning the proper maintenance of your St. Augustine lawn is important to avoid costly turf repairs. Our easy scheduling and annual contract options will guarantee your St. Augustine lawn is properly maintained without having to worry or plan throughout your busy summer!
